Once you've picked a material and size, the next question is usually "so what actually happens now?" Here's the process from first site visit to a tank that's live and holding water, so there are no surprises along the way.
A technical team visits the site to check access, ground or roof conditions, existing plumbing tie-in points, and any structural constraints. This is also where capacity, material and layout get finalised — the same factors covered in our price guide get confirmed against the real site rather than assumptions.
Based on the survey, a design is drawn up covering tank dimensions, foundation or base requirements, and accessory placement — ladders, platforms, nozzles and overflow. For commercial projects this design is typically shared for sign-off before fabrication begins.
The tank needs a level, load-rated base before anything else happens — a concrete plinth for most above-ground installs, or an excavated and prepared base for an underground tank. Getting this step wrong causes problems for everything built after it, so it's not one to rush.
Whether it's Zincalume, GI powder-coated or GRP panels, the tank is factory-formed and delivered in sections, then bolted together on site. This is the part of the process panel-based systems make easier — no crane needed to lower in a one-piece tank, and sections can be carried through tight access points where necessary.
Once the shell is up, the liner goes in, followed by nozzles, valves, the dome roof, ladders and access platforms. Every fitting is checked and torqued to spec before the tank is closed up.
The tank is filled and checked for leaks, and connections to the site's plumbing network are tested under normal operating pressure. Smaller residential tanks can be installed in a matter of days once the base is ready; larger commercial or multi-tank installations take longer, mainly driven by base preparation and capacity rather than the assembly itself. A proper site survey is the only way to get a realistic timeline for your specific project.
