Not every site has room for a tank above ground, and not every client wants one visible. Underground water tanks solve both problems, but they come with their own set of decisions — mainly around material, waterproofing and access. Here's what to think through before you break ground.
Space is the usual driver — villas, schools and commercial plots with a tight footprint often can't spare rooftop or yard space for a large tank. Underground storage also keeps the tank out of direct sun, which helps keep stored water cooler and reduces the bacterial growth that warm water encourages.
Buried steel is a corrosion risk unless it's properly protected, which is why GRP panel tanks are a common choice for underground installations — the material simply doesn't rust, regardless of soil moisture or groundwater contact. Concrete is the other traditional option for larger underground reservoirs, though it needs proper waterproofing and lining to keep stored water clean.
Before anything gets built, a proper site assessment needs to check the groundwater table. A high water table can push against an empty or partially-filled tank hard enough to cause structural problems, so the design needs to account for that — either through tank weight, anchoring, or drainage around the excavation.
An underground tank still needs to be inspected and cleaned — arguably more important, since problems are less visible day to day. Excavation, base preparation and backfilling add time and cost compared with an above-ground install, and the sequence matters — get the base wrong and everything built on top of it is compromised. This is one area where it pays to work with a team that's done it before rather than treating it as a standard construction dig.
